In this course the students will explore essential food habits and provide practical solutions to better adapt health learning habits.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, the students will:
- Understand why proper nutrition during adolescence is crucial and how it affects growth, development, and overall well-being.
- Identify the common obstacles that prevent them from adopting healthy eating habits and discover practical ways to overcome them.
- Gain the skills to shop for budget-friendly, nutritious foods, provide convenient and nutritious snack options, and plan meals that prioritize fruits and vegetables.
- Communicate the numerous advantages of a balanced diet, including improved physical health, enhanced mental well-being, and contributing to a more sustainable environment.
Materials Needed:
- A list of common processed food items (e.g., chips, soda, candy bars)
- A list of fruits and vegetables (e.g., apples, carrots, broccoli)
- Whiteboard, chalkboard, or online platform for presentation
- Marker or virtual drawing tool
Step 1: Introduction (10 minutes) Begin the activity by discussing the importance of healthy eating habits for teenagers. Emphasize the long-term benefits of a balanced diet on their physical and mental well-being. Highlight some key points from the course’s learning outcomes.
Step 2: Nutrition Detective Challenge (30 minutes) Divide the class into small teams (3-4 students per team) and explain the rules of the “Nutrition Detective Challenge.” The objective is for each team to analyze and classify various food items as either healthy (fruits and vegetables) or unhealthy (processed foods).
- Show a list of common processed food items (e.g., chips, soda, candy bars) on the whiteboard or screen.
- Give each team a few minutes to discuss and categorize these items as “Healthy” or “Unhealthy.” Encourage them to consider factors like nutritional content and potential health effects.
- Display a list of fruits and vegetables (e.g., apples, carrots, broccoli).
- Repeat the categorization process for these items.
Step 3: Group Discussion (10 minutes) Bring the class back together and discuss the results of the Nutrition Detective Challenge. Have each team share their classifications and reasoning behind their choices. Facilitate a conversation about why some foods are considered healthy while others are not, considering factors such as nutrients, processing, and added sugars.
Step 4: Reflection and Real-Life Application (5 minutes) Engage the students in a brief reflection exercise. Ask them to think about how they can apply the knowledge gained from this activity to their own lives or when working with teenagers in a vocational setting. Encourage them to consider strategies for promoting healthy eating habits.
Step 5: Homework Assignment (Optional) Provide students with a homework assignment related to the topic, such as researching and preparing a simple, healthy recipe or designing a poster promoting the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. This assignment reinforces the course’s key concepts.
Here are some thought-provoking questions and prompts to guide reflective discussions after the activity:
- How did this activity change your perspective on the food choices that you make?
- What are some of the common barriers you face when trying to maintain a healthy diet?
- What steps can you take to further educate yourself about nutrition and healthy eating?
